about me . . .

I was born and raised in St Louis, Mo.   Began playing guitar in high school.   USAF  1967 to 1971.  Finished my degree at the U of Mo at St Louis under the GI Bill.  Bought my first dobro in 1973 for $250.  I learned to play by listening to Josh Graves with Flatt & Scruggs, and from Mike Auldridge's first dobro album.

1975 moved to Dallas, Tx to take a job as an auditor with the Dept of Defense.   I soon hooked up with the bluegrass band Salt Creek Express and recorded an album with them.

By the 1980s I was writing dobro instrumentals.  On a business trip to Washington DC I took a cassette of 3 originals to the Birchmere Restaurant where the Selcom Scene played.  I met Mike Auldridge and gave him my cassette.  He was super nice.  I received a very complimentary letter from Mike soon after.   We were casual acquaintances from then until his death in December 2012.

I was SO honored to have Mike play on my CD.  He requested to play on a swing number.  So . . . I wrote a swing number.   Mike was in the DC studio recording his part in August 2012,  when he was dying from a long bout of cancer.  He passed away in December.

I knew Robin Macy,  founder of the Dixie Chicks.   I recorded with the Chicks on their song Christmas Swing.  I recorded on many albums by local Dallas artists.

In Dallas I was part of DAMN,  the Dallas Acoustic Musician's Network,  a big name for the players in

Charli Alexander's Sunday Jam,  which has been going now for 40 years !

I retired in 2007 and began working to record 21 original songs, mostly dobro, but a few guitar numbers too.

I had many great Dallas musicians playing on my CD.

In 2012 I moved to Portland, Or.  I've hooked up with many fine musicians in Portland to play bluegrass, jug band, blues, gypsy, country, and early jazz standards.

My other interests include pre-Columbian cultures.  I've traveled to Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Peru to visit the ancient sites.

I've dabbled in wood carving and stained glass.
